Kards Unlimited Calendar of Events: March!

Personally I have mixed feelings about March.  It has some great stuff like the start of spring and St. Patrick’s Day, but it’s also long and mostly still pretty wintry.  It’s a tough month, sometimes.  Here at KU, though, March has some excellent events, so we’re very excited about it!  Click READ MORE to find out what’s happening in the coming weeks!

Happy Curling is Cool Day! Or, A Farewell to the 2014 Winter Olympics!

So, the Winter Olympics are over again and we have to wait 2 years for the next Olympic events.  Four years if you're only really interested in Figure Skating and Ski Jumping and Bobsled.  That is a major bummer, but we should not allow ourselves to collapse under the weight of our despair.  Instead, let us celebrate that event which has, in recent years, become symbolic of the Winter Olympics at large, Curling!  Bonus, February 23rd is Curling Is Cool Day!  And for those enterprising souls who wish to give a card on this most august of days, we have one!

Pretty cool, amiright?

Even if you think things like Skeleton are cool (and really, how could you not, given the name and the fact that it involves people flying face-first down an ice chute at 80 mph), you will have to admit that Curling is pretty killer.  It's like some crazy Scots (because, like all ridiculous-but-badass games, it hails from Scotland) decided that they wanted to play shuffleboard one winter, but because shuffleboard is not manly enough, they invented curling.  And then somehow, over the course of hundreds of years, it became something that the IOC thought was Olympics-worthy.  Which is not to say that it isn't, because it totally is.  It's just funny that some Scottish hick game played with rocks dredged out of a pond became an Olympic sport.  Just sayin'.

Sorry, they just look goofy.

The best thing about curling is that curlers are expected to be excellent sports.  Despite the presence of officials in big curling matches, curlers are expected to call their own fouls; it's also considered totally unacceptable to cheer an opponent's mistake or to celebrate one's own success.  Although there are no tangible consequences for breaches of etiquette, curlers are nevertheless polite and sportsmanlike.  So not only is it the coolest sport, but it's also the classiest.

Good curling, eh?

Kards Unlimited Calendar of Events: February!

Come in and get cozy!

Ah, February.  The month of love!  I think Valentine's day is in February because it's so ridiculously cold and uncomfortable that everyone needs to just snuggle into their couch/bed with a boyfriend/girlfriend/cat/dog/gerbil.  Nothing to do with love or any of that crap, everyone's just freezing their butts off, so they invented a cuddling holiday.  Just a hypothesis.  Seriously, people, it is cold as anything out there and you need to head to KU for all your pre and post-cuddling supplies!  Bonus, we're also quite cuddly!  Click READ MORE to find out what else is going on at KU this month!

Open your freezers, tomorrow’s Ice Cream for Breakfast Day!

Ice cream with and for breakfast.

Yes, February 1st is Ice Cream for Breakfast Day, otherwise known as the best day of the year and/or any damn day I please, because I'm an adult.

Ice cream is hands-down the greatest invention of humankind.  Take that, microprocessors!   And you, modern medicine!  Yeah, I said it.  And obviously, breakfast is the best meal of the day.  Combining the two was only a matter of time, really.

Obviously, there are many great ice creams to choose from.  Classic brands like Edy's, Ben & Jerry's, and even a bunch of new crazy artisan organic stuff because America.  One thing that not a lot of people get, though, is homemade ice cream.  And let me tell you, it is so worth the (ridiculously minimal) effort.  (I mean, ridiculously minimal provided you have access to an ice cream machine.  If not, you have to do the whole elementary school thing with the plastic bags and the salt water which is more effort-y but a lot more fun, so that's an ok trade-off.  Anyway)

Homemade ice cream is great for a bunch of reasons.  First of all, if you make ice cream at home you can put real ingredients in it and not, like, guar gum or xanthan gum or whatever the heck they use to thicken it nowadays.  Secondly, you can make awesome flavors like caramel apple or coffee fudge swirl.

If making ice cream sounds like the hobby for you, make sure you come grab a copy of The Ice Creamists by Matt O'Connor.  It's a totally sweet book (no pun intended) and it includes some seriously bitchin' ice cream recipes.

Plus it looks badass. Exhibit A

So, in summary, eat ice cream for breakfast tomorrow, because ice cream rules.  And so do you!

Happy birthday, Dr. Lecter!

What is there to say about Hannibal Lecter?  He's one of the greatest villains/antiheroes of all time and may have been the best role ever played by Sir Anthony Hopkins.  Charming, sophisticated, ruthless, and almost pure evil, Lecter just has that certain something that makes you root for him even as he's, you know, disemboweling people and stuff.  Man, I hope that's not just me...

The most recent iteration of the good doctor is played by Mads Mikkelsen in NBC's Hannibal.  (Man, how perfect is the name Mads for someone playing a psycho killer?)  I unfortunately haven't seen any of that yet (get on it, Netflix!), but I'm sure it's awesome, because it's Hannibal freaking Lecter.  Also because Mads Mikkelsen kind of rocks.

Look at that guy. The picture of poise and grace.

Kards Unlimited Calendar of Events: December!

Christmas time is here!

Well, friends, we're almost to the end of another year!  December is always a fantastic month here at KU, full of cheer, mirth, and (obviously) all our usual tom-foolery.  Except magnified by the Christmas factor (which is roughly one billion.)  Whether you stopped and got your Christmas cards in mid-November (Good for you!) or will be by to pick them up on  Christmas Eve (Respect.), December at KU is not a spectacle to be missed!  For your scheduled dose of whacky and obscure dates to remember, click READ MORE!
