Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

No crazy big post today, folks!  Just wanted to say I hope you're having a great holiday!  It's a great day to celebrate!  The weather's nice (for March) and there's plenty of drinks of all kinds for everyone!

If your St. Paddy's Day travels take you through Shadyside, make sure you stop in and see us!  We love visitors!

Beware the Ides of March!

So you only really have to beware March 15th (the ides of March, according to the Roman calendar) if your name is Julius Caesar and all your underlings are planning to assassinate you.  If those things aren't true of you, you're probably good.

In case this was unclear.

Couple things that I find interesting about today:  First, that it didn't become some weird, unlucky day for everyone ever.  That kind of seems like something that would have happened, you know?  Like, Caesar was assassinated on March 15th, let's make sure something terrible happens every March 15th hereafter!  Because portents and stuff!  (Also, portents.  Great word.)

Another thing:  I really wish the Gregorian calendar used terms like 'ides'.  For real, though.  In the Roman calendar systems, the first day of every month was known as the Calends, which is an awesome word.  Each month also had a 'nones' and an 'ides'.  These days are thought to have corresponded with phases of the moon.  Of course, since we no longer use a lunar calendar, the words no longer have any significance, but they're still cool-sounding.

I think this probably happened on a sweet day like the Ides of Septembris or something.

Basically what I'm saying, I guess, is that Classical Rome was awesome and despite the fact that none of the modern conveniences existed then, I would totally love to have experienced that time.

Get out your calculators, March 14th is Pi Day!

Ah, pi.  That mystical ratio that defines the relationship of a circle's circumference to its diameter.  That one, irrational constant that surrounds us, penetrates us, and binds the galaxy together.

Awesome, but too much work for me.

Also pie.  That magical pastry that defines the relationship of a man's heart to his stomach.  That one, perfectly rational constant that surrounds us, penetrates us, and binds the galaxy together.

Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th because pi is approximately 3.14 and March 14th is 3/14.  See what they did there?  True Pi-heads wait until 1:59 p.m. to start their Pi Day celebrations (because the next three digits of pi are 159), but I think that's entirely too long to wait for pie, myself.  When I was in high school, I made a Key Lime pie for pie day.  This year a request has been made for Blueberry, so that's what I'm gonna do.  Exciting stuff.

Here's another interesting Pi Day fact.  March 14th is the birthday of Albert Einstein!  I'm not sure how much pi factored into Einstein's work, but it's a cool coincidence nevertheless.  You know what else is a cool coincidence?  We have a card for Pi Day!  It's deliciously math!

Sweet! See what I did there?

St Patrick’s Day!

The parade is Saturday the 16th, people!  If you haven't prepared already (and probably even if you have), you'd better come down to the store and grab your St. Paddy's day accoutrements!

We have T-shirts!

Keep Calm and Drink On!

Lol, "Magically Delicious."  So many inappropriate connotations, you guys.

We also have Lucky Shamrock wands, Irish Accent Breath Spray, fun green facial hair, and soooooo many stickers.  More stickers than any one human could ever need or use.  And some great Ireland-themed books!  If you haven't shopped our St Paddy's section and you thought you were ready for this weekend, you were wrong.  Come see!

You've heard of Shamrock Shakes? Try Shamrock Soap!

The Port-A-Pint is literally the perfect St. Paddy's Day device. I have 3.

A collapsible pint glass!  Can you even imagine the possibilities?!  Now, open containers are not permitted at the parade (seriously, they're going to fine people, apparently), but the celebrations after definitely call for the Port-A-Pint.  I mean, come on.  (Btw, here's a link to the parade site.)

Here's some green, stick-on sideburns. Because why not?

Ok, I guess that's it.  Just wanted to share my St. Patrick's Day excitement with you guys.  Have a fun (but responsible!) weekend!

Gifts for Your Compulsively Organized Friends!

We all have a friend who's a slave to the old adage, "a place for everything and everything in its place."  It can be hard to find a good present for these people, because then they have to find a place for the new thing and it's a whole dramatic production and sometimes it's just easier to buy them a drink and call it a night.  But!  For you dedicated gift-givers out there, KU has some great ideas about what you should get your friend that they will totally love and geek out over.  Here follow these gifts:

File folders!

Organized people love folders, you guys. Papers definitely cause a lot of my clutter, so it makes sense...

Clips, sticky tabs, magnetic note pads and more!

clips and stuff

Speaking of keeping papers organized, those mustache paper clips are totally fly. Plus, those magnetic note pads with attached markers? Can you say memo?

Bookmarks, personal library kit, and Card Catalog note cards!

Bookmark pads for keeping a place, a library kit to make sure all your books are in order (and are returned in a timely manner!) and card catalog note cards! Adorable AND the box has dividers!

Menu file and recipe organizers!

Even in the most organized house, the kitchen can be a bit of a disaster. Keep menus and recipes in good order with these fabulous organizational aids! In a variety of styles and designs!

All the lists!

There's nothing more organizationally arousing than lists and dispensing slightly passive aggressive notes, you guys. Best gifts ever.

Your Entire Life Has Prepared You For This Moment…

This card is so awesome. It will knock your proverbial socks off.

March 10th is the International Day of Awesomeness!  A day to perform feats of awesomeness!  In other words, a normal day for the staff of KU.  We breathe, eat, and sleep awesome.

The International Day of Awesomeness came to be in 2007.  It was started because a guy called another guy awesome at work.  The story's slightly more complicated than that (view the original Day of Awesomeness website here), but that's the basic gist.

I'm sure you've noticed how 'awesome' is one of those really overused words.  My favorite comedian, Eddie Izzard, has a great bit about it (see below).

Awesome's ubiquity notwithstanding, you'll never catch me passing up a chance for more awesome in my life.  Think I'm gonna leave you with just another video clip.  This post is starting to remind me of Cat Game.  (From a movie that can only accurately be described as awesome.)

Hey! New Guy!

We have a new guy!  He's pretty cool, I guess.  His name is Max and he's dreamy.  I could go on, but this letter he gave us when he applied kind of speaks for itself.

So there's that.  Come in and meet him some day!
