Merry Go Round Day!

July 25th is Merry Go Round Day!

I don't know about you guys, but I LOVE merry go rounds. Be they beautiful and intricately designed, like everything you hoped that your My Little Pony collection would grow up to be

mgr1

Lovely!

or creepy ones that you see in abandoned wings of old malls!

MGR7

SO FUN

America's first Merry Go Round is still up and running in Rhode Island. Made in 1876, The Flying Horse Merry Go Round is named as such because the horses are only attached from the top of the carousel and not at the bottom, so they swing out when the ride is in motion.

mgr4

It is the only flying horse carousel left in the country and is detailed with real horse hair in the tail and mane, because nobody cared about that sort of thing in 1876.

If you can't make it to Kennywood for Merry Go Round Day,

mgr6mgr5

take some time to enjoy the best Merry Go Round Moment in Movie History in the best movie ever, Mary Poppins!

mgr2

IMAGINE! ME in a HORSE RACE! Why I'd NEVER.....

Aren't you nostalgic for the good old days?!?

mgr8

BRB I'm going to go re-watch Mad Men for the 7th time....

It’s National Ice Cream Month, Guys! Wooo!

July is National Ice Cream Month, and to celebrate I've created a well considered top ten list of the best ice cream novelties to enjoy this month (or whenever you want, you nonconformist, you!).

Ok! Let's start with THINGS FOUND ON AN ICE CREAM TRUCK

#10

Flintstones Push Up

1 ic

So much better than Flintstones vitamins

Hands down most fun (messy) thing to eat from the ice cream truck!  The best flavor was blue but for some reason they always only had orange, which was also really great.

#9 Strawberry Shortcake

straw

Yum!!

#8 Creamsicles

creamsicle

!!!!

Perfect if you could never decide whether to get ice cream or a popsicle and were sent in to a panic every time the familiar ice cream truck music twinkled faintly in the breeze.

#7 Generic Ice Cream Sandwiches

IceCreamSandwich

Seriously, the more plain the better! The ones from my elementary school pizza day were the BEST! Who knows where they came from?!? I remember them being wrapped in plain white paper. Honorable  mention to generic tubs of  ice cream with the little wooden spoons attached on top.

#6 Rocket Pops

*humming national anthem*

rp

Rocket pop jersey!!!

SOOO GOOD! SO PATRIOTIC! MUY REFRESCANTE!!

#5  Glove with Gumball Baseball

1

Delicious! Great way for kids to sneak gum into the house! Most of the time looked like this when you took it out of the package...

2

Still good!

#4 (#1 best thing from the ice cream truck) Mickey with "Chocolate" Covered Ears

3

Look how cute!

I think the ears were actually coated with whatever Swiss Rolls are coated with... but they are still so good due to a smushy ice cream texture and vague chocolate/vanilla flavors.

OK! The top three are comprised of  TREATS FROM AN ICE CREAM SHOP  (because sometimes you just can't find enough quarters rolling around in the couch in time to catch the ice cream truck)

#3 Clown Cones from Baskin Robbins

clowns

" Yes, I'd like twelve clown cones, please"

I love these because they are the best parts of an ice cream cake,  the frozen icing and ice cream. Mint chocolate chip was my favorite flavor. I requested these for my sixteenth birthday. No shame, best party ever!

#2 Root Beer Float

RBF

The ice cream foam at the top !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

#1 DQ Cherry Dip

cherry dipTHIS IS THE BEST!!! NO ARGUING !

Happy Birthday, Elwyn Brooks White!

EB-White-Charlottes-Web-520

E.B. White's full name is Elwyn Brooks! REMEMBER THAT FOR TRIVIA! You will impress all your friends!

E.B. White, poet, essayist, and renowned children's book author was born on July 11th, 1899.  He was the author of wonderful childrens books like Charlotte's Web, Stuart Little, and The Trumpet of the Swan, books that are still read today by many.  My favorite is Charlotte's Web. Everything about it is amazing, from Fern bravely saving Wilbur's life, to the fun descriptions of the county fair, to the true, lovely friendship between Wilbur and Charlotte. And he somehow managed to make the idea of countless baby spiders floating in the breeze adorable and heartbreaking.

You-have-been-my-friend

Let's just not talk about Charlotte's baby spiders at the end, ok!? *sob*

Additionally, E.B. White contributed to the New Yorker for six decades, wrote a well regarded grammar and style guide  book called The Elements of Style, as well as a couple of books with interesting titles, the marriage/relationship/ love comedy Is Sex Necessary? Or, Why You Feel the Way You Do, and a collection of essays entitles One Man's Meat.

Here's a fun fact(!): The Elements of Style is a bit controversial, some still swear by it while others find it kind of random with more outdated  "style" rules than solid grammar rules. Maybe to celebrate E.B. White's Birthday, you should debate antiquated grammar rules with your loved ones. What's that you say? That sounds like a terrible idea? And my fun fact wasn't that fun? Well. Fine. You can just celebrate by rereading on of your favs.

Remember when he was on Glee and totally out sang that dummy, Mr. Shue? That is how I remember it, anyway...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Uy5oGcLQaY

Did you guys see him kill it AGAIN at the Tony's last sunday night? He sang "Sugar Daddy" from Hedwig and the Angry Inch and everybody LOVED IT! Especially Sting and Samuel L. Jackson (why were they even there?!).  After you're done watching this years performance you should just clear your schedule and watch all of the NPH hosting the Tony's videos you can find! They are amazing and you won't at all feel like you've just wasted an entire evening, you will just rejoice in the wonderfulness of Neil Patrick Harris, MD, PHD in Horribleness!

Happy Birthday, Maurice Sendak!

June 10th is universal favorite Maurice Sendak's  Birthday! Sendak  (June 10th, 1928 - May 8th, 2012) was, of course, the author of beloved picture books like Where the Wild Things Are, In the Night Kitchen, and Outside Over There  as well as the illustrator of  the Little Bear series.

images (4)

Remember this book?!

Though today his stories are cherished by millions young and old,  they were originally rather controversial. Where the Wild Things Are was said to be too scary for children and In the Night Kitchen is still contested for its "inappropriate nudity".

images (1)

I'm SCANDALIZED !!

MaxWildThings

Actually, this is kind of scary! Put down the fork Max! #goodcallonthetimeout, max'smom

I think its fair to say that those scandalized missed out on some fantastic children's literature, because Sendak's books were written with real emotion and because of it still resonate with a wide audience of dreamers, wild things and rule breakers.

So celebrate Maurice Sendak's birthday by reading your favorite with a little one or, if you prefer, lisen to an interview with the ground breaking author that will make you laugh or cry like a baby. The NPR interview linked second is amazing and touches on some of the themes found in My Brother's Book, his last book inspired by the relationship he shared with his older brother.

We totally have this in the store! Just sayin'...

Happy Birthday, Maurice Sendak! We love you so!

Best Book EVER!
