“I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality…. I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word.”
—Martin Luther King, Jr.
February is Black history month. We invite you to come take a look at our Read Beyond Borders collection, featuring a number of amazing authors like James Baldwin, Ibi Zoboi, Angie Thomas, Toni Morrison, Octavia Butler and Ta-Nehisi Coates. KU Book Club is reading Sula, by Toni Morrison and will be discussing it on 2/24 at 6PM in the store.

February is also Library Lover’s Month, and Marijuana Awareness Month. TBH we also have products in the store related to those topics also, but we didn’t like make a special part of our store for any of that.
Let’s get this rolling! Holidays! Weird things to celebrate! Here they come!

The first day of February is Bubblegum Day and Working Naked Day! We would really love to hear about the office where they celebrate Working Naked Day. For serious, give us the story.

On the second, we have a whole day planned for you. It’s Ice cream for Breakfast Day, so your first stop is to the local ice cream parlor that just happens to still be open in February. (We suggest Millie’s Ice Cream, but you’ll have to sleep in and have breakfast around noon. Definitely not the worst idea.) The second is also Groundhog Day, so like, ignore the news for the day. No one wants to know what that darn rodent thinks about the weather UGH. It’s also Take Your Child to the Library Day, so if you have kiddos, just spend the whole day there. Pack a stuffie or two, a cozy blanket and just cuddle up in a library nook and read all day long. We highly recommend this. Don’t have kids? Yeah you do! You have an INNER CHILD! TAKE IT TO THE LIBRARY. EVERYONE GO TO THE LIBRARY THIS IS NOT A DRILL GO GO GO GO
We love libraries.

Superbowl Sunday is on the third. It’s also National Honey Badger Day! Next up is National Homemade Soup Day(Feb 4), Chinese New Year, Did you Fart? Day and National Shower with a Friend Day(all Feb 5), and National Chopsticks Day(Feb 6).

The seventh is Send a Card to a Friend Day and we are SO prepared to help you with that. Did you know that we have entire section of friendship cards? You should come stock up!
Hopefully the winds will be solid on Feb 8th: it’s Kite Flying Day! (We have kites in stock, just saying.) Next up is National Pizza Pie Day, Read in the Bathtub Day(both Feb 9) and Umbrella Day(Feb 10).

Birthdays during this first week and a bit of February include: Ayn Rand and James Joyce(both Feb 2), Elmo(Feb 3), George Romero(Feb 4), Laura Ingalls Wilder and Charles Dickens(both Feb 7), John Williams and Seth Green(both Feb 8) and Tom Hiddleston(Feb 9).

The second full week of February isn’t quite as packed, but it has a biggie in it. We’re gonna start off with National Freedom to Marry Day(Feb 12). (heart heart heart) Then there’s National Italian Food Day and Galentine’s Day(both Feb 13). And on the 14th, the holiday everyone’s been waiting for: National Donor Day! Wait. no. International Book Giving Day!!!! Wait. Still no. Oh. It’s Valentine’s Day. Right! (tbh, I think I’m more excited about International Book Giving Day, what is that??)

But Valentine’s Day. Did you get your valentines ready to send out? Even if you don’t have a sweetheart, you might still have a mom or aunt or niece or nephew that would LOVE to get a valentine from you. We’ve been stocking up on love cards since Dec 26th, so we have something that will work for you, no matter who you’re giving a valentine to!!

And then. On Feb 15th. It’s Hippo Day.
Who comes up with these things?

Birthdays this week include: Judy Blume and Charles Darwin(both Feb 12), Simon Pegg(Reb 14), Joseph Gorden-Levitt and Levar Burton(both Feb 17).

Sometimes I like to think up of little stories about holidays that all happen on the same day. Do you want to hear one? No? TOO BAD.

It’s 1930 and this guy Clyde is hanging out with a telescope and a pretty lady. He’s pretty into her and def wants to impress her. So, he digs up a nice bottle of wine he’s been saving for a special occasion. They both have a glass, they’re feeling a little warm and fuzzy. There’s definitely some spark here. Clyde has is flirt ON. Like, he is a suave dude today. Imagine you’re a pretty lady and hanging out with some super scientist with a telescope, what do you think you’d be doing, right? Both huddled up close to that telescope, he’s just pointed it towards a very romantic constellation, steps back and leads her towards the scope, a hand resting gently on her waist. She leans in to look, her face full of awe. This tactic is WORKING. She steps back into him and he just wants to impress her a little bit more, right? So he uses the scope to try and find something just as beautiful…. But wait. What was that? All of the sudden, he is all kinds of science again, forget the girl in the room, is that… yes! Yes it is! It’s a PLANET! Right? It looks big enough to be a planet! Omg. Clyde is FREAKING OUT. The girl is like, wtf man. And Clyde is like, DON’T YOU UNDERSTAND HOW IMPORTANT THIS IS, IT’S SCIENCE! And the girls is like, dude, I just wanted to get laid. I’m out.

Wham bam. The discovery of Pluto. February 18th, 1930. It just so happens that the 18th is also Drink Wine Day and Flirting Day! In this scenario, the wine may have been related to Pluto actually not being a planet, Clyde, you just wanted things to look bigger than they actually are.
Clearly this is all real, it all happened this way.

BACK TO YOUR REGULARLY SCHEDULED PROGRAMMING:

The 20th is Love Your Pet Day(we’d love to help!), followed by National Sticky Bun Day and Card Reading Day(both Feb 21). How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World hits the theaters(Feb 22), and International Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day, International Sword Swallowers Day, Open that Bottle Night and Curling is Cool Day all happen on the 23rd! Twin Peaks Day is on the 24th and Tell a Fairy Tale Day is the 26th.

Birthdays this week include: Bruce Wayne and Benicio del Toro(Feb 19), Alan Rickman(Feb 21), and Edward Gorey(Feb 22).

That’s it! That’s all! Check back next month for more holiday fun!

So, what do you think?
