June 10th is universal favorite Maurice Sendak's  Birthday! Sendak  (June 10th, 1928 - May 8th, 2012) was, of course, the author of beloved picture books like Where the Wild Things Are, In the Night Kitchen, and Outside Over There  as well as the illustrator of  the Little Bear series.

Remember this book?!

Though today his stories are cherished by millions young and old,  they were originally rather controversial. Where the Wild Things Are was said to be too scary for children and In the Night Kitchen is still contested for its "inappropriate nudity".

Actually, this is kind of scary! Put down the fork Max! #goodcallonthetimeout, max'smom

I think its fair to say that those scandalized missed out on some fantastic children's literature, because Sendak's books were written with real emotion and because of it still resonate with a wide audience of dreamers, wild things and rule breakers.

So celebrate Maurice Sendak's birthday by reading your favorite with a little one or, if you prefer, lisen to an interview with the ground breaking author that will make you laugh or cry like a baby. The NPR interview linked second is amazing and touches on some of the themes found in My Brother's Book, his last book inspired by the relationship he shared with his older brother.
