Oh yeah. October is the best. 31 days of eating pies, drinking cider, and shuffling through leaves when I walk around town. If that isn't enough for you, October is also jam-packed with holidays and birthdays of varying degrees of realness. Everything from Pierogi Day to Hallowen, and everything in between. Click READ MORE to...you know....read more.

October is National Baking Month. This makes total sense, because as it gets chillier you want to be using your oven more and plus. Plus all the best pies are made with fruits that are ripe in October. Pumpkins and apples, I'm looking at you. Hungrily. All pie donations can be dropped off at the counter. Pies aren't the only thing cookin' in October. Let's not forget about breads, cakes, cookies, cupcakes, cookie cakes, muffins, scones, and pizza pies! Which is nice, because October is also Pizza Month, and as everyone knows, pizza is the best thing.

September 30th - October 6th: Banned Book Week!
As book lovers and book sellers, this is obviously a big deal for us. This is the time of year to spread awareness about the jerk-wads trying to keep people from reading things that they disagree with for some stupid reason. What better way to get back at them than reading all the books they want to keep away from you? It should be noted that this holiday is not about us trying to ban books.

October 6th: Mad Hatter Day!
This is similar to April Fools', but approximately six months later. There are just far too many pranks to pull to only have one April Fools'. We try to spread out the prank holidays so that nobody sees them coming. The Mad Hatter (from Alice in Wonderland, if you were "wonder"ing) wears a hat that says "In this style 10/6," and that's where the date comes from. Pretty crafty! Just like you'll have to be if you plan on trying to "get" someone on this holiday.

October 7th - 14th: Mystery Series Week!
If you have ever been in our book aisle, you may have noticed we have tons of mystery series. This is because they are totally awesome. If you have never really delved into a great mystery series then you are really missing out. This is your week to start. We have many recommendations for you: Agatha Christie, Dorothy Sayers, and Raymond Chandler, to name a few. If you really want to get into this, come into the store and ask one of our mystery-loving staff for some recommendations  We really love talking about this stuff, which is why we all work here!

October 8th: Pierogi Day!
If you live in our fair city, then you have eaten plenty of pierogies, I'm sure, and you have probably been drunk for most of them. Let's turn this into a PGH pride thing. I am proud to drunkenly gorge myself on delicous dough-y, cheese-y dumplings.

October 15th: Grouch Day. (No exclamation mark!)
A Grouch's mission in life is to be as miserable and grouchy as possible, and pass that feeling on to everyone else. Only then will a Grouch feel in touch with his or her world and be happy. Yet, even though a Grouch may show happiness at anyone's misfortune (including his or her own), a Grouch would never admit to being happy. Such is the stability of a Grouch's life: so balanced, and yet so unbalanced.

October 17th: Boss' Day!
At KU we love our boss. When someone pays you to talk about scifi, Harry Potter, and sexual fetishes, you know something is going right. In our case, that "something" is having an awesome boss.

October 22nd: CAPS LOCK DAY!!!1!
HAS ANYONE ON THE INTERNET EVER TICKED YOU OFF SO BAD YOU JUST HAD TO LET THEM KNOW? WAS TYPING LIKE A REGULAR, NON-LUNATIC JUST NOT DOING IT FOR YOU? UNLEASH THE FURY!!!! CAPS LOCK IS SHOUTING ON A KEYBOARD AND THERE WILL BE LOTS AND LOTS OF SHOUTING ON THIS DAY, I ASSURE YOU!!!!

October 30th: Create a Great Funeral Day!
I am sure there is a story as to why this holiday exists, but to me it just sounds like a euphemism for "Murder Day."

October 31st: Halloween!
Spooky! Scary! Everybody know what this is, so I won't even bore you with the details. Halloween is totally awesome in every way. When you are a kid its the best, and when you are an adult its the best. Free candy? Hello?
