Mad Hatter Day is a day of silliness celebrated on October 6th. Alice in Wonderland is a fantastical story that is relived by every generation. Most of us grew up on the Disney movie, and more recently was the version with Johnny Depp. Even better you may have even read the original stories themselves. However you know Alice, we are all familiar at least in some way. Each character is so iconic, and none more so than the Mad Hatter.

genius.

genius.

Fun fact: Lewis Carroll never specifically refers to him as the "Mad Hatter." The character is simply named the Hatter. But the phrase "mad as a hatter" had existed long before Carroll wrote Alice's Adventures.

Now more on Mad Hatter Day itself. The date of celebration comes from card that the Hatter wheres on his hat. It reads "10/6" in the movies, but originally reads "In this style 10/6" in the book. This is supposed to be the price of the hat. 10 shillings and 6 pence. But it just so happens to translate well to a date for celebrating.

Mad Hatter Day is referred to as "April Fool's Light." Not so much a day for pranks and what have you, but a day for more generalized silliness. A celebration of silliness in our everyday lives. At KU we can't pass up an opportunity to be goofy in reverence of a holiday. I mean we'd be doing it anyway. Celebrate with us. We even have a KU card for the holiday iffin you want to spread the cheer to others. Be a little extra silly. Wear your silliest hat. Recognize how silly our short little lives, just one of 7 billion, are but a blink of the eye in the expanse of time in the cosmos. Or ya know, just search Mad Hatter images in Deviant art. That'll make you lulz.
