The King in Yellow by Robert W. Chambers
Random House
Hardcover
*Tyler’s Pick*
This is hands down my favorite short story collection I have ever read. These stories gripped me in a way I haven’t felt since I first had the macabre pleasure of picking up my first collection of Poe stories. It is so very hard to do horror right, and this collection hits it out of the park. This book weaves you into the madness and misfortune of our protagonists in such a unique way that it is still being referenced to this day (it was written in 1895!). To anyone who enjoys feeling uncomfortable, lost, confused, terrified, mystified….this is your book.
This collection of stories has influenced writers from H.P. Lovecraft and Raymond Chandler, to Robert Heinlein, Grant Morrison, Neil Gaiman and George R. R. Martin. The King in Yellow and his legendary city of Carcosa may be the most famous character and setting you've never heard of.
There are tons of Easter eggs and symbols related to this story collection embedded in the first season of True Detective, (the good season) it was a major inspiration and influence. i09 calls it “The One Literary Reference You Must Know to Appreciate True Detective” We are all in.
